About the Course

Senior Healthcare Support Workers help registered practitioners deliver healthcare services to people.

As an experienced support worker, you carry out a range of clinical and non-clinical healthcare or therapeutic tasks, under the direct or indirect supervision of the registered healthcare practitioner. You provide high-quality, compassionate healthcare, following standards, policies, or protocols and always acting within the limits of your competence.

You will be working in partnership with individuals, families, carers, and other service providers. Locations of work may include one or multiple of the following:

  • Hospitals or hopspice
  • Health or day case unit
  • Birth centre or midwifery-led unit
  • Someone’s home
  • Operating theatre
  • Nursing or care home
  • Assessment centre
  • Local community/services including school, prison, GP surgery
  • Charity or voluntary organisation

Learners can opt for 6 different options which include – adult nursing, maternity support, theatre support, mental health support, children and young people support, and therapy support.

Entry criteria

You will need:

  • To be aged 16 or older
  • To be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week with 20% of your normal working hours set aside for you to complete your training and study
  • Apprentices will be required to have or achieve level 1 English and Maths and to have taken level 2 English and Maths tests prior to completion of their Apprenticeship

All applicants must have an interview and assessment in English and Maths to confirm that the apprenticeship is suitable for them.

Employers may also set additional entry requirements, as a prerequisite to working with them.

How is the apprentice assessed?

Apprenticeships are assessed by classroom study coursework and assessments along with on-the-job practicals.
